Let’s talk oil safety, Part 1:
First I want to let you know there are oils that are considered a “hot oil”! What does it mean when an oil is hot? A “hot oil” when used on your skin can cause a warm or tingling sensation on the skin when applied without dilution. It can sometimes feel like it is burning. Always dilute the “hot oils.”
How do you dilute an oil? It is recommended to dilute with 1 drop of the essential oil to 4 drops of a carrier oil.
What is a carrier oil? A carrier oil can be fractionated coconut oil, sweet almond oil, grapeseed oil, jojoba oil, avocado oil and many more. You can always do a google search to find an essential oil carrier oil. That will give you a good list of oils. Depending on which oils you get there should be carrier oils available on their site.
Always read the label of your essential oil bottle. There is a caution label on your oil bottle. For any other concerns, always research your oil if you don’t know information about the oil.
Some oils can be applied “neat.” Neat = undiluted. You can use the oil directly on the skin without using a carrier oil. Please always check for sensitivity when using oils. You can do a patch test and see how the oil reacts to your skin.
What is a patch test? Wash your forearm, use a few drops of diluted essential oil on your clean arm. Cover with a bandage and keep dry for 24 hours. If there is no reaction then it’s likely you are safe with that oil. If any rash or irritation happens please wash the area before the 24 hours is up with warm water and soap.
Areas to avoid- avoid putting oils into the nose, inner ears, eyes, broken skin and other sensitive areas.
