Raise Awareness of Malignant Mesothelioma
I am a little behind on my post and I am sorry about that. Cancer has always been something I am concerned about. I had someone contact me to help raise awareness of Malignant Mesothelioma. I was happy to post this for him.
Raise Awareness of Malignant Mesothelioma During Lung Cancer Awareness Month
Lung cancer is a disease that develops when people breath impure air. The impurities can include tiny dust particles, smog or tar and nicotine from smoking cigarettes. The first symptom that is noticed will be a persistent cough that is not associated with a cold. As the condition continues to worsen, the sufferer will notice a lack of energy due to a shortness of breath and shortage of oxygen. These same symptoms can also indicate an individual is beginning to develop malignant mesothelioma.
There are three variations of malignant melanoma, and the symptoms of each are different. Pleural Mesothelioma is a
malignant cancer affecting the pleura surrounding the lungs and is also the most commonly diagnosed form of mesothelioma. This is because asbestos exposure most often occurs through inhalation. The miniscule asbestos fibers result in cancer because they become embedded in the tissue of the pleura .
Asbestos has been used for a wide variety of applications, but mostly in construction projects for insulation and in some building materials. While the use of asbestos increased significantly about 200 years ago, awareness of the danger resulted in strict restrictions on its use. The material consists of tiny fibers that can be inhaled when they are disturbed and become airborne. If asbestos is part of a material it does not pose a problem, but extreme care is required when demolishing older buildings where asbestos is present.
Any individual who spent many years working in the construction industry where materials containing asbestos were used will be at risk for malignant mesothelioma. Inhalation of the fibers results in them becoming lodged in the pleura where permanent damage is caused. Over the course of many years, cancer and other illnesses can develop as a result. In many cases the damage is cumulative, but there may be no symptoms for decades. This means there will be a lot of cases of late diagnoses, and this causes the cancer to be very difficult to treat.
Because this is a type of cancer that is very aggressive, available treatments rarely result in a cure, but doctors may be able to prolong life through various treatments. An aggressive treatment plan may also help patients find relief from debilitating symptoms. Surgery to remove a mass encroaching on the lungs may help someone suffering from the disease to breathe more easily, although it will not be possible stop the cancer from spreading.
When malignant mesothelioma is the diagnosis, the medical team will be able to suggest effective for the patient. Dependent on the location of the mesothelioma tumors and what stage they are at, the treatment plan many include surgery, chemotherapy or radiation. Very often these strategies used together offer the best possible outcome.
